If you don’t, let me tell you – it is one of the most exciting and fun games to get to know somebody better.

So, you might have come across situations where you sweat or turn red on meeting somebody. You can use this game to break the ice with a stranger. A group of friends can also play it at a night out or you can also use this game to play with your crush.

This game helps you identify a common ground before you allow yourself to develop some feelings for the opposite person.

Before we dive deep into the questions list, let’s first understand…

What is ‘21 Questions Game’?

21 questions is a question-and-answer game that can be played between two people or a group of friends. You can also play it with your cousins or family members on a night out.

However, the only point of difference is that you ask only 21 questions as hinted by the name itself. The type of questions entirely depends on the players.

Answering questions seems annoying but ONLY until you play this game.

I can vouch for the fact that while playing this game, you’ll desperately wait for the next set of questions to hit you. This exciting game can turn as personal or as casual as you want it to be.

So, now if you’re wondering how to play the 21 questions game, keep reading.

How to Play 21 Questions

Like all other question games, you just need to ask a question and wait for the other person to answer it.

However, if you want to modify it to make it more interesting, there are a few ways to do this. The four exciting ways to play this game are:

1. Classic

This is the most common way of playing this game. Anybody can volunteer or be randomly chosen to answer the 21 questions first.

The rest of the players can take turns to ask a total of 21 questions to this person. You can decide beforehand if the follow-up questions to the answers will be counted in the 21 questions.

Some groups also allow passing up to two questions that the answering player doesn’t want to answer.

The next person to answer the 21 questions can be nominated by the one who just answered the questions. Alternatively, anybody can volunteer or a player can be randomly chosen.

2. Ricochet

Hypothetically, person A selects a question and asks it to person B to start the round. Person B answers the question. To bring a twist, everyone playing the game can ask follow-up questions based on the original answer of person B.

Next, person B selects a new question and asks it to anybody else except person A. This round ends when everyone playing the game has asked questions to each other including person A. Nobody can be asked a second question unless everyone in the round has answered the question.

3. Round & Round

In this method, the questioning and answering goes in a circle. So, the entire group has to sit in a circle. Then person A asks a question and the person sitting on the right side has to answer the question.

Similarly, the next person on the right answers the next question and the game goes on until the round is completed and person A has answered the question.

You can also add some buffer time for people who wish to ask follow-up questions. However, this is optional.

4. The dice version

In this version of the game, the player is selected randomly. Then this player has to roll two dice. The number of questions to be answered depends on the numbered faces of the dice. For instance, player A rolls ‘5’ and ‘1’. Then, other players have to ask six questions.

If you’re playing with only one dice, roll the dice twice and add on the numbers in both the chances. The next player repeats the same method and the game is carried forward.

Now that you know different methods, here’s a quick…

Step-by-Step 21 Questions Game

Are you already excited to dive straight into the questions?

Well, hold your horses till I introduce to you the step-by-step process of playing this super-fun game.

TIP
You can ask personal questions when you’re playing with your close friends or your spouse and casual questions when you use this game for conversation starters

Step 1: Find someone to play with

You can play this game with a person you share romantic interests with or with a member of your group. This game produces the best results when played with someone whom you know only at a superficial level but will be interested to dig deeper.

If you have nobody new in your life, modify your questions to ask your old acquaintances in a manner that you can learn something new about them.

Step 2: Ask what you want to know

The content of the questions depends on who you are playing the game with and what you want to know about them.

For instance, if you’re playing with your crush, you would definitely want to know more about their exes and thoughts on relationships.

But when you are playing with friends, figure out if you want to know more about their background or future plans and create your questions accordingly.

Step 3: Prepare a list (or, use this one!)

Questions can be asked in two ways. The first way is to ask whatever comes to your mind. This can sound like a more entertaining choice but always comes with a risk of getting too personal.

The second way is to write down a list of questions before starting the game. This way everyone is mentally prepared to answer the questions. If you don’t want to prepare the list, you can obviously use this one (trust me, once you use it, you will never think of going anywhere else!).

Step 4: Take turns asking questions

After deciding the target and questions, each member should get a turn to ask questions. Divide the questions equally among the players.

If the number of questions cannot be divided equally, then let every player ask one question in a circle until the list of questions is exhausted. This way, everybody gets a chance to ask questions and to answer them.

Step 5: Don’t miss your turn

Once you have finished asking the questions, take the turn and answer the same questions or the new set of questions put forth.

Answer the questions honestly and show courtesy towards the one who is asking. If you’re uncomfortable with a question, pass and request for a new one – but in any case, don’t miss your turn.

Wait. There’s more before I finally start the question list!

Game rules 21 questions game

Even after knowing the types and processes, you should still know the basic rules of playing a questions game. Remember, if you fail to abide by these rules – there’s a high risk of hurting someone’s feelings or even worse, making the game boring.

1. Don’t be judgemental: Never judge any answer. If you cannot appreciate an answer, it is better to stay silent.

2. Respect: This game is meant for fun. Even when you are asking personal or embarrassing questions, make sure you don’t put anyone in an uncomfortable position. Preserve a person’s integrity and show some respect.

3. Promote Honesty: You need to give honest answers to the questions. Liars are liked by none. In fact, the real fun is in the honest answers. No one wants to know the hero that you have been all your life – they want to know your fun and crazy side.

4. Don’t repeat questions: The fun is spoilt when the questions are repeated. Keep sprtthe game interesting with your creative questions or keep this list handy. That’s all that you’ll need! 😉

5. Keep the conversation going: To get a deeper insight into a topic, ask follow-up questions or simply ask ‘Why’. The stories behind the answers can give you a hearty laugh most of the time.

Finally, it’s time to begin the most-awaited questions list. I always prefer to start with a heartfelt laugh – so here are some…

5 Tips for playing 21 questions game

After the questions, here are some tips that you should keep in mind while playing the game. This will only make the game more interesting and help you dodge all the red flags.

Remember, we are playing for fun and that calls for absolutely no conflicts.

1. Establish “pass” rules

There can be questions that can upset the players. To avoid ruining the fun environment, it is advisable to develop rules beforehand. Establish ‘pass’ rules.

This means if a person is uncomfortable with a question, they can pass a question and request for a new one instead of that.

2. Make a list of off-limit questions

Before starting the game, set limits for the questions. There can be some questions that mustn’t be asked in any situation. Such questions can range from sex, intimacy, or crime.

So, depending on the group you’re playing with, you should always identify these off-limit questions. This will ensure that no player is offended or worse, angered.

3. Be respectful to each-other

I understand that playing 21 questions is super fun and you would like to tease or ask inappropriate questions to make it more interesting. But you should always respect the privacy of a member.

If they don’t want to talk about something, allow them to skip the topic or answer it vaguely. As the saying goes: Treat people the way you want to be treated.

4. Ask relevant questions

Always consider the people you’re playing with. Understand where they are coming from and draft your questions accordingly – only then you’ll be able to make this game fun.

So, for instance, if you’re playing this game with the members of your sports club, put up questions like ‘What is your favorite game?’ or ‘When did you first start playing the game?’

If in this group, you will ask questions like ‘What is the Netflix series you last binged on?’ – it will not only consume their interest but will also make it entirely boring.

5. Agree upon boundaries mutually

When only two of you are playing this game, you tend to get more personal that can hamper your relationship with the other person. Instead, set your boundaries mutually for the questions before starting the game.

And also agree upon maintaining the same relationship after the game. Give the person a chance to accept or reject a question if they’re uncomfortable answering it.

Over to you…
